The
Way I See It - March 2002
We were spending time with my wife’s
parents a few weeks ago and my father-in-law said something
to my boys which I had never heard before. “There
was a man who wisely said, ‘be sure you’re right,
then go ahead,’ he also added this to wit, ‘be
sure you’re wrong before you quit.’” I
found this to be one of the most profound things I have
heard in a long time. Throughout my life, Pop has given
the okay to a number of pursuits with this one requirement
“Don’t quit.” You see, quitting is one
of those things that gets easier the more you do it. I have
had quite a rare couple of months and in a recent and particularly
difficult moment, my brother offered his help, with one
expectation: “Don’t quit.” I’ve
come to understand something about this fight in which we
all find ourselves. Our enemy must knock us out to win.
We, on the other hand, are only required to be standing
when the final bell rings, to receive our prize. “Take
up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand
in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians
6:13 A cheer in this sometimes long and tiring race from
a fellow participant, father and son to fathers and sons.
